OpenAI ChatGPT Fails UPSC Written Exam

An artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot named ChatGPT has gained attention since its release. It has been used to finish tasks like producing work emails in a particular tone and style, and according to directions. Numerous people have admitted to being addicted to the big trend. Following the current trend, Analytics India Magazine recently evaluated the chatbot's performance in one of the most difficult exams, the UPSC. Yet only 54 out of 100 questions from Question Paper 1, Set A, of the UPSC Prelims Exam 2022 could be answered by the chatbot. According to the magazine, the OpenAI chatbot was unable to meet the 2021 cut-off of 87.54 percent for students in the general category. The topics covered by the questions included current events, geography, economics, history, social development, polity, and ecology.

When asked if ChatGPT could pass the UPSC prelim exam, it was unable to give a "solid answer". "I do have a wealth of knowledge and expertise, including regarding the UPSC test and associated subjects, as an Al language model. Yet in addition to information, the UPSC prelims exam also calls for critical thinking, application, and time management skills. I, therefore, am unable to say for sure whether or not I would be able to pass the UPSC preliminary exam "it declared.

The magazine then questioned ChatGPT on each of the 100 questions on the exam. When asked which countries out of Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan share a border with Afghanistan, the chatbot named all the first four countries (however, the correct answer was Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan). ChatGPT also developed its own answer to several questions. Despite the user only providing four options, it offered an "Option E" as a response option. According to Analytics India Magazine, ChatGPT won't be able to respond to inquiries about current events because its knowledge is restricted until September 2021. However, ChatGPT gave wrong answers for subjects like geography and the economy which are not always time-specific.
